Dr. Michael GrayB.Sc.(Hons), PhD.mike@chemsafety.co.nz Michael J Gray was born and raised in Hawera. He moved to Christchurch in order to continue his education at the University of Canterbury in 1977. Michael left University to begin employment in 1984, having obtained B.Sc.(Hons) and Ph.D. degrees in Chemistry. Michael began employment as a scientist at the Health Departments southern regional occupational health and environmental chemistry laboratory based within the National Radiation Laboratory, Christchurch. Main duties were providing technical advice, analysis, and assistance in occupational health to Health Protection Officers throughout the South Island. In approximately 1989 the Department of Health transferred responsibilities for occupational health to the Department of Labour OSH Group. At this time the three regional Health laboratories were transferred into DSIR-Chemistry. Two years later DSIR-Chemistry became the EHFSL (later shortened to ESR). Michael was included in these transfers, continuing support to the OSH Group and to private clients in the field of occupational health and environmental chemistry. In late 1992, following the introduction of the Health and Safety in Employment Act, and ‘user pays’ policies, Michael resigned his position and set up Chemsafety. Michael has been continually involved in the provision of chemical safety and occupational hygiene consultancy services for over 18 years.
